Another explosive in a Manchester canal

A MORTAR shell has been discovered in the Ashton Canal in Droylsden.

This is the second in a Manchester canal in as many months with a bomb bing pulled out of the Rochdale Canal in October.

Potentially explosive device

Greater Manchester Police erected a cordon around the area on the Ashton yesterday, Sunday, as a specialist team examined the potentially explosive device. Firefighters too were present all keeping the public away from the area.

The emergency services were alerted in the early afternoon, but by late afternoon they had all packed up and gone, the bomb disposal team taking the mortar shell with them.

During this time the waterway was cordoned off, but is now clear.
