Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals closed.

YESTERDAY, Tuesday, saw the closure by Canal & River Trust of both the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals.

There is now no navigation allowed through either Bosley Flight on the Macclesfield or Marple Flight on the High Peak, the reason given is water resources, Keith Gudgin reports.

Less water than needed

The Trust relates this is to 'facilitate the works to Toddbrook Reservoir, water levels have been kept at a significantly reduced level. This draw down along with the continued low rainfall means that we have started the boating season with less water than we need for unrestricted movement through the coming months'.

With coronavirus related restrictions it tells it has consulted with its boating customers and taken the decision to protect water resources.
