A GROUP of seven boys were alerted to a pram rolling into a canal followed by a mother and came to the rescue.

The boys received commendations from the police after they helped a 39 years old woman who had entered the St Helens Canal when her four months old daughter’s pram rolled into the water, Alan Tilbury reports.

Strugling to hold the baby above water

The boys rushed to the caal, saw the woman was struggling to hold her baby above the water, so took it off her wrapping it in a coat to keep it warm, helped her out of the canal and called for an ambulance.

Chief Inspector Catherine Pritchard, of Widnes Local Policing Unit, stated:

“The quick thinking, bravery and community spirit of the boys impressed everyone at Widnes Police Station.  They helped to prevent this incident from becoming far more serious.

“As such we decided that all seven boys are worthy of special commendations in recognition of their heroic actions.”

At the presentation of the awards the mother had the opportunity to thank the boys for their prompt action and gave them all presents.
