Weaver open at long last

IT WAS way back on the 2nd January when Saltersford Lock on the Weaver was closed. Eight months later it is at last reopened.

At 4pm today, Friday, boats will be allowed through the repaired lock and be able to cruise the 12 miles to where it meets the Manchester Ship Canal, Keith Gudgin reports.

Other problems

It may be remembered that the original stoppage concerned a cill repair, but we were told at first there was a stop planks problem, then from time to time other problems with one requiring new steelwork, though no details were given.

It is surely hoped that broken cill on the Wheaton Aston Lock on the Shropshire Union does not require the same timescale.
