Dry dock rescued

IT WAS over 40 years ago that the dry dock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Burnley was last used, but it is now back in business.

The historic Burnley's Bank Hall Dry Dock was connected to the Bank Hall Colliery and used for the maintenance and repairs of its coal boats, but then closed, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Advantage

However two couples saw the advantage of bringing the dock back into use, so Les and Angela White, Brian Denison and Jane Garnett came together to bring the derelict site back into use as a working dry dock.

For many years the old dock has been used as a rubbish tip, it being hard to recognise, but sheer hard work and finance, together with a bit of reclamation have brought it back to a workable condition.

It is once again a working dry dock, and will fill a wanted need as the nearest two are at Skipton and Wigan, so will be available for boat repairs, painting, etc.
