Swimmers close Pontcysyllte

Published: Wednesday, 23 July 2014

THEĀ  Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was closed yesterday as two men decided to swim its length holding up boaters wanting to cross.

With the men in the water, there was no way boats could proceed across the aqueduct as it is only just wider than a narrowboat, so boats at both ends where held up, Alan Tilbury tells us.

No attempt to get out

The men made no attempt to get out of the water, and so the police had to be called with them being forcibly dragged out and taken away for questioning.

The men where hiding under the towpath at one time with one of them attempting to get onto a boat that was waiting, but was unable to. It was made more difficult to get them out of the water as they were in different parts of the aqueduct.

It was re-opened after the men were taken away.
