BCNS Explorer Cruise—day six

Published: Friday, 16 May 2014

DAY six and on to Tipton Green on the Birmingham Canal Navigation Society Explorer Cruise, writes Keith Gudgin.

Not much to say today as we had a pretty short and uneventful run but we did have the usual rubbish round various props with some boats having to stop for extended times to clear them.

Safe at normal speed

The canal along the Main Line was much cleaner than we were used to and I felt for the first time on the whole trip that it was safe to cruise at anything like normal speed. I understand there is a group that look after the canals around Tipton and they are doing what appears to be a good job.

We ascended the Ryders Green Flight and popped out onto the main line at Pudding Green junction which then gave us various ways to go. I chose to turn right and ascend the Factory locks with most of the others following behind as it was the shortest and most direct route and also meant that we were facing the correct way round for the morning. It was a bit boring though, being so straight, but was wide and seemed deep as well.

Historical talk

We are now breasted up three deep and on pins again. We have organised a get together in the Pie Factory eating house for tonight and we have an historical talk in the morning in Tipton Library before we move off on the final part of the cruise in the afternoon.
