Another bridge damaged

IT IS obvious, by the number of 'accidents' of heavy vehicles crashing into canal bridges that many drivers are incapable of negotiating them.

The latest to be damaged—and thus closed to both motor and boat traffic is Moons Bridge over the Lancaster Canal near Preston when an HGV driver miscalculated and took out its wall, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Hanging over

The rear of the lorry was hanging over the remains of the parapet, and a crane had to be brought in to remove it, but such is the damage that it is unsafe for vehicle use and for boats passing underneath.

The bridge is by the entrance to Moons Bridge Marina, which means the waterway is only accessible one way—to the North.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman stated it was in communication with Canal & River Trust with a view to its repair, as the road over the bridge is a much used thoroughfare, and its closure is causing problems.

The masonry that fell into the canal has now been removed, but navigation is still closed.
