City clean-up

WATERWAYS through cities and town always seem to attract litter from their residents, so there is an effort to clean-up the waterway around Frog Island in Leicester.

Part of the attempt are posters along the Grand Union Canal asking people not to dump litter or throw bread for the swans and ducks in the area, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Out in force

Students are being involved with another part of the waterway around De Montfort University, with them out in force picking up litter from the towpath and out of the canal.

However it is not only litter, but as previously reported in narrowboatworld the abundance of weeds that are being allowed to thrive, and which prompted Leicester Rowing Club to take on the clean-up, with Anne Hock, its secretary complaining:

Neglected area

"The stretch of the river and canal south of Frog Island is plagued by litter, discarded food and weeds. It is a pretty neglected area and the mile-long stretch of canal and river we use is often restricted by weeds."

A spokesman for Canal & River Trust responded by remarking that the Trust is 100% behind the scheme.
