Drunk's car hit Barton Bridge

A DRUNK driver crashed into another car then impaled his vehicle onto a girder of Barton Swing Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal.

Liam Quinn's vehicle then caught fire, and it was only the girder that went through the car that prevented it dropping into the waterway, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Nearly 100mph

A witness told Manchester Magistrates Court that the car was travelling at between 90 and100 mph as he came towards the bridge and crashed into another car.

Liam Quinn was unconscious and covered in blood, when he was discovered, but the girder, which could have killed him had gone between the seats and missed him.

Excess alcohol

When he eventually had a blood test nearly five hours later, he was still over the limit, and admitted charges of driving with excess alcohol, driving without due care and no insurance.

Liam Quinn was given eight weeks imprisonment suspended for a year, 100 hours unpaid work, and £85 costs and banned for 18 months.
