First narrowboat in Surrey

Published: Wednesday, 29 August 2012

THIS coming Saturday (1st September) sees the first narrowboat into Surrey on the restored Wey & Arun Canal.

The recent completion of the work on a section of the waterway by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust's volunteers means that they can run boat trips, and utilise the canal into Surrey for the first time in over 140 years.

The Trust already runs hugely popular trips at Loxwood, West Sussex, and next weekend will see the start of its second boat centre.

Summit pound

The most recent restoration work focused on a section of canal next to the entrance to the Three Compasses pub, located by Dunsfold Road at Alfold, which is the summit pound (pictured) of the whole canal, running  along the edge of Dunsfold Park.

The Trust has refurbished its 12 seater boat John Smallpeice ready for the inaugural trips on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September, with boat trips being run at half hourly intervals from 11am to 4pm on each day, priced at £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.
