Dangerous bank on T&M

BOATERS are warned not to get off their boats between Bridge 60 and Bridge 61 on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Armitage.

The edge of the towpath has been eroded (i.e undercut) and may or may not support boaters weight depending on location, Ralph Freeman writes.

Cages have failed

Some years ago the towpath at this point was reinforced using 'Gabion Baskets' (wire cages containing stones). It seems the cages have failed and the stones are now in the bottom of the Cut.

This leaves the immediate edge of the towpath unsupported except for the remains of the wire cages. The turf at the bank edge gives no indication of the void beneath! Fisherman too could be in for a nasty surprise too should they choose to fish in the wrong place? CART Central Shires have been informed.
