THE high winds, coupled with soggy ground due to too much rain are causing many canal-side trees to fall.
On the Caldon Canal alone, two large trees came down within the space of a week and another on the Macclesfield Canal, Ralph Freeman tells us, and advises:
"Might I suggest boaters do not moor near trees for the next few weeks. With the soil so wet it seems tree roots, particularly those on the sides of cuttings with shallow soils, are unable to retain their grip and are toppling into the canals."
Ralph's photograph shows contractors removing a fallen oak from across the Caldon Canal near Bridge 38 at the weekend.
