THE incidence of drunks drowning in the waterways is much higher than was thought, with the police revealing that in one town alone 10 drunks have drowned in seven years.

So concerned are thepolice at the increasing number of people drowning in the Severn at Shrewsbury, that they have released the information as a reminder of the dangers of walking near the river while under the influence of alcohol, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Around 11 drunk

The information is that at least 24 people have drowned after falling into the Severn during the past seven years, with nearly half of them, around 11, under the influence of alcohol.

These people were all walking home alone after drinking alcohol, but also, the police report that there have been more than 100 incidents of people at risk in or near, the river in Shrewsbury.

Two this month

This month there were two incidents where a man fell into the river, but in both cases people were with them, and they were rescued.

The problem is that the river in the town centre flows past many clubs and pubs, with many using the river path to walk home or pass by it.

The police advised anyone who had been drinking heavily not to walk home alone by the river.
