Permission has been granted for the installation of a hydro power installation at Abingdon Lock on the Thames
It is a community group, Abingdon Hydro that has been given permission for the installation, with the group to sell shares to raise the £1m it will cost to install, Alan Tilbury tells us.
Three hydrodynamic screws
The Environment Agency has granted Abingdon Hydro the licence to install a generator, consisting of three 10 tonne hydrodynamic screws that will be installed in the weir to create power to feed into the National Grid.
A spokesman for Abingdon Hydro claimed that the installation could bring in an income of around £120,000 per year.
