Lowering is not the answer

IT IS a fact that the top few inches of a canal are those inches that lose the most water due to cracks etc, writes George Boyle.

Unfortunately, by semi permanently lowering the level, those few inches are now the next layer of the puddle which, in time will dry out and crack. What then? Do they lower again to avoid the new cracks ad infinitum until the cut is empty and cracked from top to bottom?

Seal the cracks

The real answer is for British Waterways to manage their resources effectively and seal the worst cracks but manage and British Waterways in the same sentence is a clash of terminology!
