Beware of Lock 1W

Published: Thursday, 16 June 2011

BOATERS considering cruising the Huddersfield Narrow from East to West should be aware of the danger of Lock 1w.

The bottom gates, being hydraulically operated, have no beams, making it easy for the bow of a boat to overhang the gates, Martin Clark writes (relating to the problem of a boat stuck on the gates and slowly being tipped up.)

Continued to worsen

Also, the hydraulic paddles were painfully slow to close, so the boat's condition continued to worsen, even as the paddles were being slowly closed.

The photo of the incident, was taken after the bottom paddles were shut and the top paddles opened, so it does not show the boat in its most critical state, but as it is levelling up again.
