Sulphur free diesel

A DIRECTIVE by the Fuel Quality Directive Transposition states that all gas oils (red diesel) be virtually sulphur free from next January.

The Directive introduces a requirement that, from 1st January 2011, all gas oil (red diesel) used in ‘inland waterway vessels' and recreational craft when not at sea will have to contain no more than 10 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram of fuel—making it virtually sulphur free.

This will mean cleaner running engines, and the possibility of less problems with the many boat diesel heaters that cause so much trouble and expense to users.

However, it has been stated that the 'sulphur free' diesel, all part of the government's cleaner fuel campaign, will come at a higher cost.
