Wigan flooded!

WITH just over a week before British Waterways closes down the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from Wigan, the town was flooded!

It was under a deluge, with roads under water and the Asda supermarket flooded, but with all the water washing away into the Douglas.

Above average

The rainfall went on for more days, with the Met Office forecasters stating the amount of rain so far in July was well above the average for the month.

Helen Chivers, a forecaster for the Met Office, said 55.1mm of rain fell in the Lancashire area between 1st and 14th of July, 72% of the average for the month.

Yet the reservoirs across the Pennines in Lancashire remain particularly low despite the recent rainfall, with many still less than half full, and they are at the lowest since records began 74 years ago, so it has little effect on the decision of British Waterways to close the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from Monday 2nd August.
