A BOATER HAS LED a team of volunteers to deliver bags of coals to people living on narrowboats as an act of kindness.

FreeCoalIt was narrowboater Andy Simpson who led the team handing out free coal to boaters, Janet Friend reports.

He is moored on the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes, and explains:

"I know it's a really small gesture but hopefully that will have a ripple effect and we can spread just a little bit of kindness among this community."

Ben Slaney, who has lived on the water for 12 years, spends £500 a year on coal, and told the gift was very welcome indeed.

Josh Panter told that the gift definitely makes a difference, as the temperature had dropped to the point now where in the nighttime it's really cold and their diesel heater is just struggling.

The project was organised by Drop Dead Generous, a philanthropic group encouraging people to be kind.

The group giving Andy Simpson a grant of £350 to buy coal for boaters ahead of the winter months.
