Funding for new Trent bridge 'hangs in the balance'
THERE are doubts concerning the building of the proposed new Trent bridge in Nottingham.
Named the Waterside Bridge, its funding remains in the balance, reports Janet Friend
Funding for the first bridge over the rive in 60 years hangs in the balance owing to delays on the project.
The work on starting the bridge was set for this summer, it costing £12 million.
Will cost £6 million more
But it is now confirmed that the bridge will not be completed until the spring of 2026 and that the cost of the project could be as high as £18 million.
Nottingham and Derby were successful in securing a joint £161 million from the fund back in 2020, with the government money to be spent on a range of sustainable transport projects in both cities. Yet because the Waterside Bridge project has been delayed, the city council now tells it is not clear whether or not the Department for Transport (DfT) will still agree to the funding in full.
So there are doubts as to whether or not this new bridge will be built.
