'Some subsidence' is now 'substantial subsidence'...

THE subsidence on the Rochdale Canal is worse that first realised.

It is now being described as 'substantial subsidence' Keith Gudgin reports.

Canal & River Trust have discovered upon inspection that the subsidence at Failsworth near the junction of the Rochdale and Aston canals, is worse than first thought and anticipate the 'design and repair' of the works to take some time.

Remain closed

This means the navigation will remains closed between Lock 65 Alfred Street Lock (65) and Coal Pit Lower (80).

The initial investigation into the substantial subsidence is by Tannersfield Middle Lock (67) with the trust stating it is now in the process of establishing the cause and developing a 'suitable methodology' for its repair.
