Rotten beam snaps-off lock gate

THE Grand Union Canal is closed at South Harefield after a balance beam snapped-off.

This was as boaters were attempting to move the lock gate, when its rotten beam snapped-off, Keith Gudgin reports.

In the open position

Though a broad lock, the lock gate was in the open position so became inoperable.

Canal &  River Trust have had to close the navigation, but hope to make a temporary repair so that it can be worked, once the necessary materials have been sourced.

Eventually it will have to have a new balance beam fitted.
