THERE were 49 closures or restrictions reported on the CaRT stoppages website, but a further one yesterday makes it 50!

The closure notice on Tuesday, of the Aylesbury Arm makes it the round figure of 50, Keith Gudgin reports.

The half century

An 'issue' with a paddle on Lock 1 on the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal means that stoppages and restrictions have now reached the half century, surely the worst condition the waterways have ever experienced.

Little wonder so many boaters, ourselves included, are so concerned about where it is now safe to navigate on the waterways.

Now reopened

The paddle problem has now been attended to and the Aylesbury Arm reopened. So down to 49.
