Lock gate replacement closes Grand Union

THE broad lock on the Grand Union that was restricted to narrowboats only is to have new gates.

Lock gate replacement will start on the Grand Union Canal at Kings Langley as Lock 71 gets new gates fitted, Keith Gudgin reports.

Restricted to narrowboats only

This is the lock where the gates were in such poor condition that both could not be opened on the broad lock, so it was restricted to narrowboats only until new gates could be fitted.

Canal & River Trust tell that the navigation will be closed to all craft from 6:00am Monday 7th September until 18:00pm [6pm] Monday 14th September.

The Trust states however that the last staff assisted passage for narrow beam craft will be on Friday 4th September.
