Celebrating Sheffield's canal

Published: Friday, 22 February 2019

TODAY sees the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the opening of Sheffield's canal.

It was on the 22nd February 1819 when the first ever boats arrived in the city to the delight of the many residents gathered to see the unusual spectacle of boats approaching along the new canal, Alan Tilbury reports.

Another flotilla

Today, there is another flotilla of boats that will arrive at Victoria Quays, but this time not working boats, but of course pleasure boats, arriving at around 1pm.

At the Quays there will be a reception committee together with many activities to keep the crowd entertained, including a very special light projection of archive images together with live music and street entertainers.
