WORK on the extension of the Birmingham tram system Midland Metro will close a major part of the Birmingham canal network next year.

The navigation between Old Turn and Gas Street Basin of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal in the city will close in January for work to begin, Alan Tilbury reports.

No re-opening date

No definite date has been given for re-opening of the waterway but it is expected to be late Spring, with both the waterway and towpath closed throughout.

The extension to the Midland Metro, when completed, will pass over the canal and is part of the £700 millions scheme to regenerate Paradise Queensway in the city.
