Couple saved from canal

WITH literately thousands of revellers taking to the streets of Manchester, especially around the clubs and pubs of Deansgate, it was remarkable that none, under the influence of alcohol, fell into the Rochdale Canal.

The couple in the picture, who stumbled against the canal wall, could easily have gone over into the waterway, but were saved.

Collapsed on the ground

Men and women were seen collapsed on the ground as people carried on partying into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The waterway wall along Canal Street was lined with people, some drunk, lying on the ground, but the fence erected some years back stopped people climbing onto the wall as they had done in the past, so saved lives.
