THREE holes have been discovered in the bed of the Lancaster Canal near Lune Aqueduct, making the repair a major operation, that will close it for at least five weeks.

After the fish were relocated the section was fully drained, revealing the three holes in the bed of the canal, comprising of two large holes and a small one.

These were causing the leakage into the embankment, and will require plugging, with the normal method now being a liner covered by clay and joining it to the canal bed.

We are told that contractors will be working evenings and weekends to complete the work, which is having serious consequences for boaters, but pumping will be installed to keep the water level in the lower section of the waterway.

As the towpath is an important path for walkers and cyclists, efforts will be made to keep this open.
