A Bernard

THE lock gates shelter at Warwick's Saltisford Canal Trust is just one of a number of improvements that have taken place in recent years, writes Allan Richards.

Three recent projects taken almost at random are a new boundary fence, a sensory garden and a 'Bernard'.

1,100 years

Whilst one can imagine what a boundary fence is, or even a sensory garden, a 'Bernard' needs some explanation!

Just as the canal contemplation area (lock gate shelter) marks the 30th anniversary of the Saltisford Canal Trust, 'Bernard' celebrates 1,100 years of Warwick as a town. Crafted from living willow, 'Bernard' is a representation of part of Warwick's coat of arms—a 'bear and ragged staff'.

Origin lost

The origin of the 'bear and ragged staff' is lost but it is known to have been associated with the Earls of Warwick since at least as early as the 14th century. 'Bernard' is, of course much newer having been unveiled (if that is the word) by Warwick mayor Bob Dhillon just two months ago (photo by Jo Lodge).
