AT THE final count, just seven boaters will stand as candidates for the four ‘private boating' seats on Canal & River Trust's (CaRT) Council.
Due to lack of interest by the electorate, some 20 nominees failed gain the ten sponsors required to stand.
The boaters
- Miss Ruth McCabe—a continuous cruiser
- Jim Owen—RBOA ex chairman
- Richard Phasey—St. Pancras Cruising Club
- Phil Prettyman—long term boat owner
- Stella Ridgeway—a continuous cruiser endorsed by NABO
- Vaughan Welch—Former IWA Trustee
- John Wickes—Rammey Marsh Cruising Club
Lack of interest
It is not only boaters who are disinterested. Lack of interest has also been shown in the other constituencies of ‘business boating', ‘volunteers', ‘friends' and ‘employees'.
The ‘friends' constituency, for example, consisted of just three nominations with only one, Ms Nicola Benjamin, having the required sponsors necessary to stand as a candidate.
