Huddersfield canals turn orange

PART of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal around Marsden and also the Huddersfield Broad Canal waters have taken on the Christmas spirit and turned orange.

The Environment Agency officials who are investigating are baffled, but all boaters who have cruised through Harecastle Tunnel will know the reason—it is the iron ore in the tunnel that colours the water, Alan Tilbury reports.

Standedge Tunnel

It would seem that something similar has happened in Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow, as the tunnel is on the top pound of the canal, so anything entering it will drain out of one end or the other.

If this is the reason. the orange water is perfectly harmless, but could be a permanent feature if this is the case, as it is permanent at Harecastle.
