Sawley chandlery loss

Published: Thursday, 27 February 2014

THOUGH retail outlets tend to close one day a week, chandlers are the exception, with boaters needing their services every day, but Sawley Chandlery is breaking the trend.

It is to close every Tuesday, as a posted notice from Rod Grant depicts, which is causing consternation amongst its customers, with one member of its staff daring to organise a petition to keep it open, that our Jan Green was only too pleased to sign, being a regular customer, but alas only being at the marina on Tuesdays, a customer no more.

Good customer

Jan purchased everything she could when fitting out narrowboatworld's sailaway some 13 years ago, and since then has purchased numerous items such as batteries, Comastic, pumps, etc as well as a great deal of clothing, even a £80 waterproof jacket this Tuesday. (The picture shows Jan—wearing a Chandlery purchased jacket—and staff member Chris.) Jan complains:

"It is easier to manage staff, having a day off every week, but what about goodwill to customers?"

Difficult to understand

But we are told, no more—the chandlery will be closed. But what people are finding difficult to understand is that it should be closed nearing the start of the boating season, and not last October, as business dies down, as it seems lack of customers is the prime reason for its closure.

So it looks like another regular customer will be heading Mercia way towards Midland Chandlers.
