THE Cherwell has overflowed its banks in many areas of the Oxford Canal, with all flood gates closed and the waterway impassible in many places.

Following the exceptionally high rainfall even the summit pound in overflowing its banks and still rising, Allan Richards tells us.

No navigation

There is no navigation whatsoever around Banbury with the waterway well over its towpath, reported at nine inches above normal, whilst at Nell Bridge the pound is reported to be over two feet above normal level.

The Cherwell has flooded the canal at Lower Shuckburgh, Shipton, Kings Sutton, Aynho, Somerton and Lower Heyford.

Throughout the rest of the system all flood gates are reported as being closed.
