Killed as car crashes into Avon

A WOMAN was killed as a car containing five people crashed through St Phillips Bridge in Bristol into the Avon in the early hours of yesterday (Saturday) morning.

The BMW was seen to have careered off the bridge into the barriers at speed then falling 20 feet into the river, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Police dived in

A woman has died and the remaining four who were rescued were taken to hospital, together with six police officers who dived off the bridge into the water to rescue those trapped.

This took place at around 4am in the morning when the road was fairly clear, with two people being arrested and two more 'helping with enquiries.'

The driver of the vehicle has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, with further charges of drink-driving, driving without insurance and driving a motor vehicle without a licence.
