New bridge for Stroud

A NEW bridge over the Stroudwater has been officially opened, furthering the completion of that part of the Cotswold Canals restoration.

At a cost of £300,000 the swing bridge carrying Chestnut Lane in Stroud was opened by members of Stroud District Council, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Capable

A heavy duty bridge it is capable of carrying modern heavy goods vehicles, with Councillor Geoff Wheeler of the council remarking:

"This underlines the tremendous progress we are making on regenerating the canal. We know residents and businesses have been inconvenienced whilst the crossing was closed but we are very grateful for their fantastic support and tolerance."

When the swing bridge eventually comes into use it will be boater operated, using the normal watermate key.
