THE Bishop of Reading intended to use the Kennet & Avon Canal and the Thames for a river pilgrimage, but things are not going according to plan.

First of all it was the troublesome Padworth Swing Bridge that had failed again and would not open, that stopped the Right Reverend Andrew Proud on his pilgrimage from Newbury to Windsor by narrowboat in order to better 'understand the area', Alan Tilbury reveals.

Repaired

After waiting for it to be repaired again, the rains had come, so the bishop was prevented from entering the Thames, as it was in flood.

The decision was made to stay on the canal until the waters had subsided, but the bishop has now been able to continue with his journey.
