Derby Canal gets planning permission

Published: Friday, 04 November 2011

PLANNING permission has now been awarded for the restoration of the Derby Canal for its entire length.

This means that restoration can take place between its junction with the Erewash Canal at Sandiacre and the Trent & Mersey Canal at Swarkestone.

When and where

With all the authorities giving permission, work can commence when and where most feasible, with the knowledge that eventually all will be completed.

Four years effort has gone into obtaining this permission with the association of the Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust and local authorities.

Boat lift

However, this does not include an arm into Derby where a boat lift has been proposed.

It was in early July that narrowboatworld reported that the ultimate cost of the restoration would be £45 millions.
