Leeds & Liverpool Canal litter

IT IS amongst the worst of the Pennine Waterways to get complaints of litter, and once again it is the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Wigan that is being spoiled by people throwing litter into the canal.

The normal rubbish of cans and bottles can be seen floating, but also Wigan Athletic detritus, and it seems that with no rubbish bins near at hand, the fans at the club use the waterway to get rid of their rubbish.

Many complaints

The local newspaper has received many complaints of how the waterway through the town is often spoilt by mounds of rubbish stuck by the bank side.

Councillor Phyllis Cullen too is concerned about the rubbish, stating:

"Litter is a problem near the canal—and despite the efforts of those who look after the canal, it is not going away. We have had this quite a number of times, especially when there is a match on at stadium, as there are no bins."

Irresponsible people

Debbie Lumb, Waterway Manager for British Waterways North West, agreed:

"It is a sad fact that a small number of irresponsible people discard their rubbish in and around their local canal. My team carries out regular litter sweeps along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal but this is a never ending battle."
