THE HOPE OF heavy rain to provide water to the canals alas did not materialise.
With waterways again being effected, Keith Gudgin reports.
The latest to close though lack of water is the Aylesbury Arm off the Grand Union Canal again, with its locks 1 to 16 to be closed this coming Friday.
Then there was the Huddersfield Narrow again being short of water over many pounds, then the Trent & Mersey again suffering, this time the pound between locks 70 and 71 into Middlewich.
The Erewash again
The Erewash again was hit by the drought with it closed this time from locks 55 to 57.
It was hoped that the coming of the rain would at last provide water for waterways, but the exceptionally parched land simply soaked it up, with very little reaching the reservoirs and thus the canals, and so the closures continue, though the trust's people are doing their best to mitigate the situation.
