Eight hours of sewage
For it has had eight hours of sewage pumped into it, Keith Gudgin reports.
This covers the area from South Mill Lock 1 all the way to the railway at Bridge 49B.
Though this occurred in early September, Canal & River Trust is still warning of the pollution that was caused by a mechanical failure at a treatment plant which resulted in sewage being discharged into the river near South Mill Weir.
The Environment Agency, as the investigating authority, has assessed the discharge as a Category 2—significant pollution incident.
Dead fish
The trust tells that its environment team is aware of a number of reports of dead fish being spotted in the area and shares the concerns of local river users, particularly those planning to take part in paddle activities.
For the safety of those wanting to navigate the Stort in the area, it is advised that they await further guidance from the Environment Agency.Â
