THE ASHTON CANAL was closed on the 1st October due to the balance beam falling from the lock gate.
But as a heritage site it required permission to repair, Keith Gudgin reports.
The permission has now been granted so the repair can now proceed on Lock 18 that was broken.
Begin the work
Canal & River Trust have agreed dates with its contractors to begin the work on Wednesday 12th November, with the repair expected to take a few days to complete.
It is expected that the the waterway can be reopened later that same week. A method of repair has already been decided.
