The RNLI told that Gordon North had been on a run when he saw the Labrador in the water on Monday at 5pm in the dark.

It was another towpath user that alerted the emergency services with a lifeboat and crew from Chiswick RNLI finding the man in the water with the dog.

Gordon North admitted he was getting a bit panicky, thinking his legs were going to go but was rescued in time by the crew.

On call at all times

RNLI Thames commander Gavin Simmons explained:

"We are on call to help all those who find themselves in difficulty on the water 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, even our beloved pets."

The Labrador was also rescued and no worse for its 'adventure'.
