Broken cill AND a breach further closes Leeds & Liverpool Canal
A BROKEN cill has closed the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, once again.
We are informed the 'navigation is closed between Newlay 11 and Kirkstall lock 7, Keith Gudgin reports.
The trust adds that the the intermediate top chamber gate cill has blown, but does not state on which lock, unless it is possibly the top lock on the three Newlay locks in Leeds.
But whatever, the navigation closure remains in place until the repairs have been made sometime in the new year.
The breach
Adding to the woes of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal there is a breach between between bridges 31 and 32 on the Canal.
This is between New Lane Swing Bridge 31 and Crabtree Swing Bridge 32.
Navigation is possible but restricted owing to the tarpaulin sheet to the wash wall and bed within the canal.
This is temporary, to stem the water over the Christmas period. In the meantime, contractors are working to plan a method of repair.
River Lock closed
Meanwhile as part of the winter works the navigation is closed at River Lock 1 (pictured) that has a breach that required divers that have found the sources of the breach that the trust want to eliminate before returning the lock to service.
The closure will now run through to 24th January 2025, which means the navigation and towpath will remain closed over Christmas.
