Further work on the Wilts & Berks Canal
WORK is progressing to restore the Wilts & Berks Canal.
With the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust now clearing the original canal bed following restoration works at Pewsham Locks, Janet Friend reports.
The canal bed is now visible following these works with the trust hoping to connect this stretch of the restored waterway to the locks.
Reconnect with the Kennet & Avon Canal
The restoration will eventually join with the proposed Melksham Link that would reconnect with the Kennet & Avon Canal.
The canal bed was completely overgrown, even with trees that had to be cleared, but there are parts of the waterway that is still in water that seems sound except for a broken culvert.
The section at Nash Hill was partially cleared some 20 years ago but could not be maintained as the trust's limited resources were focused on Pewsham Locks.
