Stoppage notice a fortnight in advance

Published: Monday, 23 September 2024

THE Canal & River Trust  is telling of a stoppage a fortnight in advance.

It  advises that the Leeds & Liverpool Canal will have a 'high probability' of its need to be closed for navigation from Monday 7th October to preserve water, Keith Gudgin reports.

This relates to the navigation between Wigan and Gargrave following a largely dry September, with its reservoir holdings low, it telling:

May help water levels

'The wet weather we’re currently experiencing may help water levels recover faster, and we are keeping a close eye on the situation. Unfortunately, the rainfall over the weekend hasn’t significantly improved water levels in the reservoirs in the Leeds & Liverpool Canal’s catchment area'.

It tells that this is from Monday 18th March 2024 08:00 until further notice, but must be an error.

There will be an update in a week's time. It hopes that by closing the navigation early it will be able to open it in October should the water supply recover.
