Preston Basin could be unearthed
PRESTON Basin that was once the site of the Lancaster Canal terminal in Preston could be unearthed.
The basin that was filled- in around 1930 was the terminus of an extension from the Lancaster Canal, Janet Friend reports.
The basin, shown on old plans, is understood to be under a present car park, with the proposal now to dig it all out and make it into a sunken 'wetland and green area' where people could relax.
Would draw people
The people behind this scheme believe that such an area would draw people and would fit in with the city's regeneration plans.
The basin played a crucial role in the development of Preston, then the railway came with the whole extension from the Lancaster Canal being filled in.
At present this is little more that an idea and has yet to go before the authorities.
