Nine paddle failures on the Huddersfield Narrow

THERE was a paddle failure closing the Huddersfield Narrow Canal yesterday, Tuesday.

This making it nine paddle failures on the waterway this year, that Keith Gudgin reported.

Needs urgent maintenance

Surely showing that this waterways needs some urgent maintenance on its paddles.

The paddles must be in a very poor state considering how the navigation has such limits on its navigation, with so few boats allowed and its lock paddles thus having little use.

Lock20EThe first failure this year was on the 30th January with the failure of a paddle on Lock 20E. (Pictured.)

Then at the end of February Lock 29E suffered its paddle frame broken.

Two paddles out of action

On the 13th April there were two paddles out of action on Lock 28W.  Then again in April a paddle failure on Lock 11W, our being told there was a 'paddle problem'.

On the 8th May another paddle failed on Lock 5W.

Into this month when on the 22nd Lock 32W had both its head gate paddles failed.  Ending yesterday, Tuesday with Lock 22W paddle failure.

Every incidence of course closing the waterway to navigation.  Perhaps some preventive maintenance would really be in order.
