Three days to get through Leeds & Liverpool stoppage

Published: Thursday, 30 September 2021

THE Canal & River Trust is allowing boaters three days to get through the stoppage at Eshton Lock (31) on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Keith Gudgin reports.

This starts today, Thursday and will close Saturday afternoon with passage allowed between 9:30am and 4pm daily.

Collapsing

This lock, at Gargrave, is collapsing, with a large depression on the towpath side together with deterioration to the masonry on the lock wall, and safety reasons demanded that the lock must be closed to navigation.

The three days will allow boaters to pass before the lock is closed until repairs can be completed. There is no intimation when this will be as it is not known what work will be required.

Crabtree opened

Good news about the Leeds & Liverpool is that the mechanical fault that closed Crabtree Swing Bridge has been rectified, with the bridge now re-opened.
