Fracking could affect canal restoration

THE restoration of the Chesterfield Canal could be affected by fracking—the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes, etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.

Fracking has been proposed around the area of Eckington where the original line of the Chesterfield Canal passed through and where the proposed new line passes, and would affect the restoration as it causes ground movement.

Petition

A petition has been launched as not only will this affect the restoration of the waterway but the proposed sites are very near to built-up areas, with the petition reading:

'Fracking has been proposed in the area of Eckington. The people of the area do not want fracking to occur due to the damages that are linked to it such as Sink Holes, pollution to the water table, heavy plant traffic on small B roads and the eye-sore that it will cause to the local area'.

The petition which today (Wednesday) has reached 1,107 signatures, has been created by Charlie Marshall and will run until 13th July 2017:
